Hi,After a few months of severe shoulder and arm pain and steroid injections not working my consultant arranged for me to see a physio which I did yesterday. The physio told me I have muscle wastage in the shoulders/arms and I've been given a range of exercises to do and I see him again next week.I did wonder if this was caused by the RA and OA and I will ask him next week but have any of you had this problem? Hi Brenda,

I know for sure that RA can cause muscle wastage. I have very little muscle in both knees at the moment as they have been so swollen for so long.

Muscle wastes very quickly however it is incredibly hard to build it up again, but possible. The exercises will help...

Much love to you,

Amanda

I agree, Brenda.

It will be very hard work keeping up with the exercises, but they DO work.

Take care

Hi Brenda,

I am sorry to hear that your injections did not work for you. Luckily for me after one week the injection seems to have stopped the inflammation.

I too am working at getting full movement back and I use the local pool and hot tub - my nurse said sit in the hot tub and allow the water to lift the arm. I can now get my arm as high as face level but with some noisy clunks and then arm wavers uncontrollably all over the place which can be quite funny. I am still finding the nightime difficult are you?

Thinking of you

I've had severe pain in my shoulder and arm for some time now. I had a steroid injection last time I saw my rheumatologist but it really didn't do any good. Sue, yes, night-times are awful, however I lay it seems to hurt the shoulder. Anyway, I've got an appointment with my rheumy on Friday, so will see what he has to say. It hadn't occurred to me that there might be muscle wastage but it looks as though I could be in for more sessions with the physio.

Hi Brenda,

Yes, RA definitely does cause muscle wastage.
I had an extremely painful shoulder and had a combination of physio and steroid injection which worked perfectly.
It isn't easy keeping up with the exercises but they do work. We need the muscles to be strong enough to support the joints.
Hope the physio works for you.

Love, Doreen xx

Hi Brenda, I have some muscle wastage at the top of my arms and in my shoulder. I've been given some exercises too and am a bit hit an miss at doing them at the moment but will keep trying as they are very gentle and do help with overall movement of the shoulder. I do one where I stand in front of a wall and slide my hand up from waist height upwards as far as I go and another one with a big elastis thing that I have to try and stretch gently out to the sides. I couldn't grip the band so I've just tied it in a loop and put my arms through it. It has helped. Hope the physio helps you.

Hi everyone, from your comments it does seem that arthritis causes the muscle wastage.I've had no swelling in the shoulder or arms so didn't think the pain was due to inflamation.
Julie, the exercises you do are similar to the ones I've been doing. The one with the elastic band I had to do while I was with the physio. The others are lying on the floor and trying to raise the arms up and over the head to touch the floor behind.Very painful!!.The other is standing at arms length in front of a wall with the palms of the hands flat against the wall and without moving the hands, bringing the elbows in to touch the wall.Trying to do them first thing in the morning is almost impossible so I try and do them mid morning, mid afternoon and again in the evening.Next week the physio is going to add more exercies to the two I'm doing now.Seeing as the steroid injection didn't work I'm hoping these exercises will but I can see it being a really long haul.Off now to do my second lot of the day.Sooooooo painful so will probably spend the evening recouperating on the settee!!! Love Brenda.
